Our Story
Continuing the Legacy of Circus Place:
The Climb
Throughout the years we dedicated to Circus Place, there were many times our loved ones didn’t understand our level of emotional investment in our work, our heartfelt attachment to our colleagues and students, or the intensity of our physical efforts toward what they thought of as “just a job”. There were countless times we’d be cheering our students on in their efforts––in moments of great achievement, demonstrations of incredible compassion for one another, and instances of overcoming great struggles––with tears in our eyes because the concept of being “proud” of them just didn’t cut it. It was never about performing perfectly or presenting a flawless act to an audience, but rather we were celebrating our students’ growth, the courage to show up imperfectly and be vulnerable, to try. And we were there, striving right along with them, appreciating the process, the climb, together.
The Circus Place in Hillsborough, NJ, was started in 2011 and began with a vision to inspire and educate children and adults through the art of circus. Founded by individuals passionate about circus arts, it quickly established itself as a prominent institution in the region. From its humble inception, the Circus Place embarked on a journey to provide a safe and nurturing environment for students to explore their creativity, develop physical skills, and boost their confidence. Over the years, it attracted a diverse group of participants from Hillsborough and the surrounding areas, becoming a community hub for circus enthusiasts of all ages. The Circus Place proudly taught and mentored hundreds of children, each with their unique stories and aspirations. From the aerialists to the unicyclists to the acrobats and the jugglers, each and every student found their niche within the vibrant circus community. With its innovative programs and passionate, dedicated instructors, the Circus Place has had a profound impact on the lives of its students. Beyond physical training, it has instilled valuable life skills such as discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and self-expression. Under the devoted training of Amelia Wieger and Devon Light -Wills, many former students have gone on to pursue careers in the circus arts, joining prestigious troupes, tours and college pre-professional programs. The Circus Place's commitment to inclusivity and diversity allowed it to create a space where students can embrace their individuality and find acceptance and support within the circus family. The sense of belonging fostered by the Circus Place has had a transformative effect on countless individuals, instilling a sense of empowerment and fostering lifelong friendships. This incredible legacy is honored to be an inspiration for newly formed Ciimb Circus Arts under the remarkable leadership of Amelia and Devon.
There have never been words that adequately describe the magic of the school, the support of the community, and the unwavering capacity of our students to show up as themselves and succeed in ways that transcended traditional definitions of “success.” Circus Place was never just a job for us in the same way that it was never just a circus school for our students. The Climb is an extension of this legacy, a reimagining of that safe space and found family, and we are excited to build this school together with your continued support.
